This chapter examines the growing power of retail corporations over the global food systems, evaluates its implications for sustainability, and discusses the rule-setting power of corporations as expressed in private standards and their exercise of discursive power reflected in the strategic use of quality and sustainability frames. It also identifies opportunities for regulating retail power in the food sector and in reducing the negative effects of private retail governance on sustainability.
