This chapter presents some perspectives on where the field of epigenetic inheritance stands today. It emphasizes that the field is well established and currently is a huge research enterprise engaged in imprinting in mammalian embryos, X-chromosome silencing, co-suppression in plants, transgenerational inheritance of epimutations in plants, meiotic silencing of unpaired DNA segments, and cancer biology. The chapter also discusses the things that are unknown about epigenetic inheritance and offers ways on how to fill those gaps in knowledge.

Keywords:   epigenetic inheritance, imprinting, X-chromosome silencing, transgenerational inheritance, meiotic silencing, cancer biology
