This chapter examines whether premotor or ideomotor principles play any role in realizing the experience of action and addresses the problem of eliminating transitional stages of events involved in the action chain. It explores the growing significance of comparator models for an action assignment and investigates whether they add an intermediate stage to theories that decide how actions are represented. The chapter focuses on the action selection mechanism, which has been neglected in ideomotor theory discussions, emphasizing action selection as this stage plays a key role in how action effects are normally associated with goals.
