This chapter describes the use of image representations in deriving surface information, and discusses the computational theories of possible decoding processes that are now quite well understood. These processes are stereopsis, directional selectivity, structure from apparent motion, depth from optical flow, surface orientation from surface contours, surface orientation from surface texture, shape from shading, photometric stereo, and lightness and color as an approximation to reflectance. The general nature of these computational theories is also covered. The chapter suggests that the effects of a dependence of perceived depth and surface orientation on viewing distance and direction are wholly to be expected and are not some strange psychophysical phenomena which need complex explanations. It also shows that there are striking differences in the clarity and precision with which the different processes are developed.
