This chapter tries to model calcium dynamics inside neurons, and analyzes the cytoplasmic calcium concentration Ci to keep the extracellular concentration Co constant. It describes how to model the different processes affecting the cytoplasmic calcium concentration and then considers a number of typical modeling cases. The chapter suggests that if the data are available, one should instead consider a more detailed calcium buffering model in which the different affinities of the calcium-activated channels make them sense varying time constants of the system. It proposes that the combination of enhanced calcium imaging techniques, the increase in available computer speed, and the rapid development of new software tools for 3-D simulation can lead to exciting, new, and detailed calcium models in the near future.
