This chapter addresses the main concepts in this book from dynamical systems and control theory, introducing ordinary differential equation-based modeling, which should allow theoretically inclined life scientists to follow the rest of the volume. It considers the stability of the equilibrium of the nonlinear system. It states that the qualitative behavior of two-dimensional systems changes as the parameter values shift. It also demonstrates the use of feedback control for control theory. Then, it describes how controllability and observability are important for control engineering.

Keywords:   control engineering, dynamical systems, control theory, ordinary differential equation, nonlinear system, two-dimensional systems, controllability, observability
