This book has used “human” to refer explicitly to the human sciences and to modes of human being that can be made explicit. It has made a crucial distinction for modes of being, particularly counterpositioning being fully human against brute existence. A secondary distinction within being fully human has been provided by the technological mode of information. The goal has been to elucidate the central transformations in being that are occurring in relation to modern information retrieval. Schematically, it is possible to differentiate being fully human in a political economy and civil society from brute existence outside society. Change in information retrieval has been driven primarily by the transfer of human labor to technology. Enhanced selection power and its theoretical valuing restores man as an artificer and the recognition of the subtle processes that underlie information retrieval.
