A Labor Theoretic Approach
A Labor Theoretic Approach
This chapter provides a full synthesis of the labor theoretic approach to reveal its economy and power by highlighting the coherence and mutual relation of elements such as selection power and selection labor. It examines the value of the approach and suggests the continuing intractability of information retrieval. It shows how the approach comprehends significant empirical developments in major information systems and selectively absorbs preexisting theories. It also argues that the production of selection power by selection labor is similar to material implication in formal logic, explains how selection labor is related to description and search labor and their possible transfer to technology, and considers mental labor, communal labor, and universal labor.
Keywords: labor theoretic approach, selection power, selection labor, information retrieval, information systems, formal logic, search labor, technology, mental labor, communal labor
