A Semantics for Retrieval from Full Text
A Semantics for Retrieval from Full Text
This chapter looks at semantics and examines the production of meaning in written language within the framework of Saussurean linguistics. It also considers changes in meaning in full-text retrieval and views meaning in written language as the product of human mental labor through interaction with the syntagma and the paradigm. Drawing on concepts from information theory, the chapter explores the frequency of occurrence and recurrence of units and combinations of units in written language, particularly words and multiword sequences. Finally, it discusses the multivalency and indeterminacy of words.
