The author has been writing prose and poetry, plays, and scripts since the 1960s and has also worked as a composer/performer for voice since the 1980s. In this chapter, she offers an experiential account of her engrossing transition from analog to digital media as a process of discovery which both perplexed and exhilarated her, and how it resulted in the elimination of meaning and the search for the “syntax of sound.” Writing as a vocal performer, the author considers the multifarious feedback loops that activate between the voice and language. She also explains her interest in the distinct but interrelated properties of different oral, written, and electronic forms of language and the “modes of memory” or mnemonic states that they engender.
