This introductory chapter discusses the theme of this volume which is about health informatics and patient-centered approach to the treatment and management of diabetes. This volume examines early efforts to create and adapt technologies to improve diabetes care and discusses opportunities to build intelligent systems that meet the needs of sick people and the risk of squandering huge sums of money on systems that fail to meet those needs. It also highlights the economic impact of diabetes in the U.S.
