This chapter considers the horizontal gene transfer among bacteria as an important aspect of evolution. It suggests that genomic acquisitions through horizontal gene transfers is pervasive in the microbial world and that hereditary symbiosis is a fundamental mode of evolutionary change in all kingdoms of life.
