This chapter discusses the role of the fronto-basal-ganglia circuit in reactive and proactive stopping. It first presents a brief overview of the neural circuit for reactive stopping. It focuses on two broad regions of the prefrontal cortex that are apparently critical for stopping behavior—the right inferior frontal cortex (rIFC) and the dorsomedial frontal cortex. The chapter also presents evidence for a neural mechanism that underlie proactive stopping.
