A history of the development of the ringtone industry is provided in this chapter, with a particular focus on its technological advances, including the changes from monophonic and polyphonic synthesiser instruction files, to digital music, and sound files. The economic structure of the industry and also discussed, as well as the debate about how digital files affected the ringtone industry. The rhetoric of personalization and its link to ringtones is analysed. The competing visions of the cell phone as a music player, and as an integrated entertainment device are also discussed.
