This chapter looks at the dramatic successes and false starts in social movements' political utilization of the ringtone. It highlights the use of political ringtones to support or criticise politicians, and examples of where the sound file format has been used effectively for political mobilization. Often remixed, these ringtones draw on the recorded voices of politicians, speaking covertly or indiscreetly, and include verbal outbursts which expose the inner workings of the state. The chapter looks at countries including the Philippines (during the Gloriagate scandal) and the US where ringtones have been used as a commentary on politics.

Keywords:   ringtone, political mobilization, sound file, social movements, Glorigate scandal
