This chapter refines and extends a framework called the dual competition model in which both emotional and motivational signals are integrated with perception and cognition so as to effectively incorporate value into the unfolding of behavior. The framework describes perception and executive functions as capacity-limited processes engaged in evaluating the behavioral relevance of stimuli and tasks in question. At the perceptual level, items with affective/motivational content act as if they had increased salience, which improves performance if they are task relevant but impairs it if they are task irrelevant. At the executive level, the behavioral interference of emotion often observed when high-arousal items are processed can be interpreted in terms of competition for finite available resources. Some effects of motivation on performance can also be thought of in terms of resources, especially when performance trade-offs are observed. In other contexts, motivation sharpens executive functions by enhancing them or by making them more efficient.
