This chapter covers some basic concepts that constitute the pillars of any artificial chemistry. Starting with principles of computational modeling and simulation, we then move on to some notions of real chemistry that often appear in artificial chemistries as well, such as chemical reaction networks, concentration dynamics, equilibrium, energy and thermodynamics. The general structure of an artificial chemistry is then laid out, followed by a few important distinctions between AC approaches, some simple examples of ACs, and some frequently used AC techniques.
Keywords: Catalysis, Chemical reaction, Chemical bond, Computational modeling, Constructive system, Energy, Law of mass action, Metadynamics, Simulation, Thermodynamics
