I defend the idea of a ‘turning’ that makes for a sharp contrast between Heidegger’s early and later thought against Thomas Sheehan, who worries that a turn from being as a human projection to being as that which ‘sends’ that projection commits later Heidegger to the ‘onto-theological’ metaphysics he so evidently opposes. I argue that what necessitated the turn is that Being and Time ‘forgets’ being by confusing it with the ‘being of beings’. Because it forgets being, there is, for early Heidegger, nothing over and above being as a human projection. This is why Dasein is essentially ‘homeless’ in Being and Time. By contrast, in later Heidegger our essence is to ‘dwell’. This is because Heidegger now understands, with Hölderlin and Rilke, that our being of beings is not a human projection but rather the ‘venture’ of the ‘unheard centre’ that maintains us in a ‘gravitational attraction’ to itself. This ‘poetic thinking’ is not metaphysics but rather a meditative technique that ‘releases’ us from the prison of ‘enframing’, opens us to ‘gratitude’ for the gift-giving ‘wonder’ of being.
