This text discusses two experiments in the use of biosensing technologies to detect and respond to contaminated public water sources. The first field study examined recreational waters at public beaches in Western New York, United States. The second field study examined biological contamination of essential drinking water in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The text traces “live” aspects of the socio-technical development of one particular biosensing technology and shows how it eventually solved long-standing biocontamination detection problems, how it introduced new ones, and how old habits and administrative inertia opposed the potential effectiveness of the system while new habits emerged.
