Pirate Philosophy’s opening introductory chapter sets the scene with an account of the politics of online sharing in relation to the struggles with the current intellectual property regime that are associated with Anonymous, LulzSec, Aaron Swartz and the Academic Spring of 2012. It discusses Creative Commons and the open access, free software, peer-to-peer file sharing and anti-copyright/pro-piracy movements, and the difficulty of forging a common, oppositional horizon that could make it easier to coordinate future political action over copyright, intellectual property and internet piracy, given these movements do not share a common idea of the commons.
