As school districts pour greater resources into educational technology, questions arise over the impact this may have on social and educational equity. Many hope that use of technology in schools can help make up for unequal resources in the home environment and thus assist in closing persistent achievement gaps. To examine this issue, this chapter examines research on access to and use of new technologies by diverse adolescents in the United States, and the relationship of such use to academic outcomes. It also summarizes a recent case study that compared deployment of low-cost laptops and open source software in two school districts. Both the research review and the case study suggest that the main factor benefitting youths is not the presence or absence of technology, but rather the support structures in place to ensure effective use of digital media.
