This essay recounts the history of the Voice of the Shuttle, launched in 1995 as one of the first portal sites for scholars of the humanities and arts. Told from the perspective of VoS's creator, the story is a parable of the transition from early optimism that the permeable, boundary-crossing functions of the academic institution could be a model for open systems to the realization that wide online communities require technical and social controls foreign to the university ethos. At the moment of the fateful “bad hacks” that hit it in the mid-2000s, VoS lived and died the dream of open system.
