Sustaining the Middle: The Roles of Sustainable Agriculture and Agri-Environmental Payments
Sustaining the Middle: The Roles of Sustainable Agriculture and Agri-Environmental Payments
This chapter presents the best method of providing financial and technical support to the agriculture-of-the-middle. The role of green payments used only for agri-environmental services in the United States is considered for supporting the midsize farms instead of a cost-effective direct lump-sum payment. The chapter discusses the possible barriers to using green payments for both agri-environmental services and midsize farms, including allocated budget and objective trade-off, and suggests cost-effective public investment using other policy vehicles. These public vehicles, probably developed through government programs to help the midsize farms, improve their knowledge and management skills to gain access to consumers and take advantage of value chains.
