This chapter finds that scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) community members from Europe interacted with counterparts from the United States, resulting in California emerging as a key probe microscopy development center in the 1980s. The number of members of the California STM community started to grow during this period due to increasing interaction and exchange of information with counterparts from Europe. Many surface science students and scientists also played a key role in the growth and development of the STM network in California and helped the state to emerge as a key center of several important innovations in the field of probe microscopy.
