This chapter first deals with the reasons for the existence of any constraints on the syntax of human languages. It then focuses on why syntax has these specific constraints—a conceptually different issue. In order to address this issue in concrete terms, the chapter briefly illustrates a still-debated theoretical model on the linear nature of the human linguistic code and on its impact on syntax.
