This chapter describes how the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) glue grant program has progressed over the years. The descriptions of the initiatives under the program demonstrate its early development and the nature of glue grants during the early stages of such awards. The chapter provides the history and background of the program, and demonstrates how changes and future results can be evaluated and understood under these circumstances. To achieve these goals, the chapter discusses potential evaluations planned by the NIGMS to estimate the performance of large grant programs, including the glue grant program.
