This chapter demonstrates the efforts of various scientists in converting magnetism into electricity. Faraday started a series of experiments on the fact that if electricity produces magnetism, then conversely, magnetic current can produce electricity. His experiments did not prove successful because the electric current that was produced was transient. Finally, on October 28, 1831, Faraday created a circuit using a rotating copper disk affixed between two small iron bars that were connected to the poles of a powerful magnet. He also connected the one wire of a galvanometer to the axle of the disk and the other wire to the apex of the disk. The movement of the disk was found to deflect the needle of the galvanometer. Faraday also performed the same experiment with a metal strip, a wire spiral, and a coil with an iron core.
