Introduction: What Is Addiction?
This book explores the causal influences and key aspects of addiction. It shows that addiction is multifactoral, but the chapters differ in how far any particular influence can succeed in explaining given key aspects of addiction by itself. The book suggests that emphasis on addiction as a social problem may indicate transfer of control of addiction away from the individual. The surveys and chapters it presents demonstrate a sweeping recent advance over the simplistic conception embedded in popular dramatic treatments of addiction. Finally, an overview of the chapters included in the book is given.
