This chapter examines the impact of the European Union (EU) on the overall social and political structures of Europe. The EU has failed to realize the objective of integrating the continent on the principles of an integrated economy, single market, and single currency, despite expanding its membership from 15 to 25 in 2004. Domestic security concerns and associated measures are expected to unite and integrate the European countries under the guidance of the EU. The EU’s failure to approve the constitutional treaty has led to division among the member states that express concerns regarding free movement and people working within member states. The member states also fear that their respective aims and ambitions will remain unfulfilled under an enlarged EU.
